Plastic Beauty explores the idea of historically feminine symbols of beauty framing a non-idealized body. By warping the classic 17th century gilded ornamental frame and making the frame into lace and literally breaking them, I am hoping to elicit a sense of breaking free from this classic framing of idealized women and femininity in art history. The frames are hung from pearl pins, another classic feminine ornament seen as a symbol of power and beauty.  I am using these frames as a way to reclaim and re-”frame” how bodies today as well as historically are judged as holding beauty.
