Body image is a theme I have always grappled with and is central to my work. This sculpture series for my thesis show titled, βThe Weight of Beauty,β challenges the way we see the female body in a gallery setting. Looking at the sculpted female body in art history, everytime we walk into a historical museum or gallery we are met with the same narrative of the overly sexualized woman from antiquity that is impossibly perfect, slender, and polished.
In response, I sculpted the female body in a raw and unfiltered way, putting these bodies in unflattering positions that emphasize their natural and real skin folds to highlight the unnatural beauty standards placed on women and redefine what we know as beauty in a museum setting.
