Body image is a theme I have always grappled with and is central to my work. This sculpture series for my thesis show titled, “The Weight of Beauty,” challenges the way we see the female body in a gallery setting. Looking at the sculpted female body as we see it in art history, every time one walks into a historical museum or gallery we are met with the same narrative of the overly sexualized woman from antiquity that is impossibly perfect, slender, and polished.
In response, I sculpted the female body in a raw and unfiltered way, pushing these bodies in unflattering positions that emphasize their natural and real skin folds to redefine what we know as beauty in a classic “White Cube” gallery setting.
