This stoneware bust was intended to comment on contemporary society and the beauty ideals forced onto women. Women often feel the need to cover their face in makeup to hide their “flaws” in order to make them more attractive. Therefore, this piece depicts cosmetics dripping or melting off a female face to reveal a natural beauty.
My process consisted of sculpting a three dimensional portrait bust and throwing a stand on the potters wheel. Then I added random swatches of glaze and underglaze on the face and fired it as to reveal some raw clay as well. I also fired the stand through with no glaze.
